Deputy Chief of Operations
The position of Deputy Fire Chief is next below that of Fire Chief. The Deputy Fire Chief is in complete
charge of the Operations, Aviation Task Force, and Safety Divisions of the Shreveport Fire Department.
The Deputy Fire Chief is under the supervision of and directly responsible to the Fire Chief. The Deputy
Fire Chief acts in an executive and administrative capacity, delegating authority and responsibility to the
officers of the Fire Department for the proper and efficient execution of their duties.
Deputy Fire Chief Tom Self graduated from Southwood High School in 1977. He joined the Shreveport
Fire Department in January 1978. He was promoted to Fire Engineer in 1986, Fire Captain in 1995, and
Battalion Chief in 2007. In 2008, he was promoted to Deputy Fire Chief.
Chief Self has attended numerous training classes and has received a variety of certifications. He achieved
Firefighter I in 1978, Emergency Medical Technician in 1979, Hazardous Material Technician in 1997,
Incident Safety Officer in 2006, Structural Collapse Technician in 2006, and Fire Service Instructor in
2007. Chief Self has completed training in the following areas: Incident Command System in 1992,
Industrial Fire Protection in 1995, Trench Collapse in 1996, HazMat Radiological/Nuclear Course in
2003, Advanced Safety Operations Management in 2004, and National Incident Management System in
Chief Self and his wife Rhonda have four children and three grandchildren.
