September 24, 2010 - New Book Chronicles Shreveport Fire Department’s Fire Chief Dallas W. Greene's (Ret.) Remarkable Public Service Career
Chief Dallas W. Greene, Jr. fell in love with the Shreveport Fire Department as a teenager fire buff riding out on Engine #6. By the time he would complete his dedicated 47 plus years of service, Chief Greene would shape a NW Louisiana Fire Department into one of the premier regional departments in the country. His efforts in building a modern department would be the foundation for which the Shreveport Fire Department since 1988 holds the distinction of being one of the few ISO#1 rated departments in the United States. Now Shreveport Fire Department's newest and most modern Central Fire Stations bears his name for all citizens to remember his almost five decades of selfless commitment to save lives and protect property. The book is authored by Gene Barattini, a local emergency manager, educator and historian and is the final product of three years of research and interviews with current and retired Shreveport firefighters. A forward to the book is provided by Sandy Davis, director of a local office of homeland security agency, retired 27 year senior fire service officer with the Shreveport Fire Department, and regionally and nationally recognized emergency management authority. Barattini chronicles the Shreveport native's unique story from his local high school athletic participation and ROTC leadership years, early career in the Shreveport Fire Department, responding to the call of his country during World War II with a remarkable US Army service in the European Theater of Operations and his returned service back to the fire service moving up the ranks to the important leadership position of House Captain of Central Station. The hallmark of the book's narrative is the authors extensive coverage of Chief Dallas Greene's almost three decades of dedicated service as Fire Chief and his remarkable visionary leadership style to make the Shreveport Fire Department possible. The book closes with Chief Greene's continued commitment to the community even after 47 years in the fire service as a mentor and advisor in the area of emergency preparedness and public safety. Barattini will present Chief Dallas Greene and his family with a copy of the book on Monday September 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Chief Dallas W. Greene, Jr. Central Fire Station – conference room- located at 263 N. Common Street. Barattini will be available for media interviews following the presentation.
