August 13, 2010 - SFD offers Simple Tips to Stay Cool During Extreme Temperatures

According to the National Weather Service, heat is the #1 weather related killer in the United States

Local meteorologists are predicting that the recent heat wave will continue for the next few days. Temperatures are expected to rise to 101 degrees with a heat index elevating above to temperatures around 110 degrees. The Shreveport First Department would like to remind the public about the dangers of prolonged exposure to these extreme temperatures and to offer practical tips for survival.

Visit one of the 15 ‘Cooling Centers’ located throughout the city at SPAR Recreational Centers today from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.
    ● Immediately contact 9-1-1, if you or someone you know experience heat-related symptoms such as heavy sweating, paleness, muscle cramps, dizziness and nausea and vomiting
    ● Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing (Dark clothing attracts heat and lighter clothing reflects heat)
    ● Keep yourself hydrated by drinking plenty of water, Gatorade or Powerade
    ● Limit outside exposure; spend as much time as possible in an air-conditioned area
    ● Take frequent breaks if you are working outside
    ● Check on children, elderly and those with chronic illnesses regularly. They are usually the first to suffer from heat exhaustion, heat cramps or even heat stroke when exposed to excessive temperatures for prolonged periods
