August 2, 2010 - City of Shreveport Making Plans to Combat Heat Wave

Mayor to open “Cooling Centers”- calls Press Conference

Shreveport Mayor Cedric Glover will announce plans to open and operate the areas first “Cooling Centers” beginning tomorrow morning throughout the city in an attempt to combat the dangerously high temperature heat wave currently gripping the area. The cooling centers will be located convenient for city residence inside SPAR recreational centers already operating in most neighborhoods.

Cooling centers are operated with success in other parts of the country, such as Birmingham, Alabama and New York City as part of emergency operations plans when the heat index exceed a dangerous level. “We are attempting to be proactive in allowing our citizens, who do not have the luxury of air conditioning, a chance to sit down and enjoy a bottled water in a cool climate controlled environment in an attempt to thwart any medical emergencies that this heat wave might produce,” said Mayor Cedric Glover.
