February 22, 2010 - MLK Neighborhood Fires
House Fires on Willie Mays and Peach streets

The Shreveport Fire Department worked hard to contain two house fires that were burning at the same time tonight in the MLK neighborhood. The first fire was reported at 2703 Willie Mays Drive at 9:19 PM. Fire crews arrived on scene three minutes later to find a vacant home with no utilities heavily involved with fire. Crews attempted to enter the home and extinguish the fire but because of rapid fire spread through the structure they were pulled out to extinguish the fire with a defensive attack. The home suffered heavy fire damage and was brought under control at 9:47 PM.

While fire crews were conducting operations on Willie Mays, SFD personnel noticed another fire burning on the next street in the 2800 block of Peach Street. This fire was reported at 9:25 PM with additional fire crews arriving in the neighborhood within five minutes. Fire crews were able to bring the vacant structure with no utilities under control by 9:50 PM.

There were no injuries reported from the fire. The fires are suspicious due to the lack of utilities in both the homes, the close proximity of both houses, and the time line associated with the ignition of both fires. Fire investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fires.
