January 12, 2010 - Local High School Students Introduced to Firefighter Course
First Ever SFD Firefighter Course for High Schools
For the first time in the history of the Shreveport Fire Department, the Department will offer a Firefighter 1 Course to local high school students. Fire Chief Brian A. Crawford is proud to announce this partnership between the Shreveport Fire Department and Caddo Parish Schools. The Firefighter 1 course will begin today at 1:00 p.m. at the Shreveport Regional Fire Academy. This course will be considered an approved elective for high school graduation.
"Approximately 20 students are enrolled in our first class, and I am elated that we are offering this kind of cutting-edge course to interested students. Hopefully, the knowledge and experience these students receive will entice them to become firefighters in the future,'" said Chief Crawford. "We anticipate this class will grow once students and parents see the career potentials."
The Firefighter 1 course is a hands-on, informative class which will give students the basic knowledge and skills to safely enter a hazardous atmosphere and extinguish fires. In addition learning theory, students will also learn how to use a Self Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) and various rescue techniques.
The media is encouraged to cover these classes.
