April 27, 2009 - SFD Chief will address Public Safety Committee of Fire Safety Initiatives

Special Public Safety Meeting

Today at 1:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers, Shreveport Fire Chief Brian Crawford will address Shreveport’s City Council Public Safety Chairwoman Joyce Bowman and the members of City Council Public Safety Committee to discuss their concerns for public safety and the department’s fire safety initiatives. Chief Crawford will report on the fire department’s progress in combating the number of fire deaths and serious injuries in our community as well as address the recent rash of apartment fires that have seemingly plagued Shreveport this year. He will also propose a viable solution to reduce to number of preventable fires in our community.

“Shreveport has not had any fire-related deaths in nearly five months, and I believe this is directly attributed to the heightened awareness of our fire safety message through the comprehensive reporting by the media, public service announcements, increased community involvement, and the department’s FREE smoke alarm giveaway program,” said Crawford.

Additionally, Crawford will ask the Committee to consider adopting a city resolution that would mandate installation of automatic stove extinguishing systems to be placed into all apartment complexes in the city of Shreveport.
