June 25, 2009 - SFD issues Simple Summertime Tips to Protect our Children and Pets

Myth: You need to run a quick errand into the neighborhood store so you decide to leave your sleeping child and/or pet in the car until you come back. You think that leaving the windows cracked will make the situation better.

Since Thursday, June 11, 2009, the Shreveport Fire Department has responded to a total of 12 hot car rescue incidents -- 8 involving children and 4 involving pets. With ambient temperatures reaching 100 degrees, temperatures within a vehicle can easily exceed 120 degrees. Prolonged exposure to extreme temperatures inside a vehicle can cause health- related issues or even death. Shreveport Fire Department officials are issuing a stern warning to caregivers and parents about the risks and dangers of leaving unattended children and pets locked in vehicles without the presence of a responsible adult.

“Fortunately, none of these incidents have been serious, but we want to remind the public that these careless behaviors could have become tragic situations,” said Fire Chief Brian A. Crawford.
Tips for parents and caregivers during the hot summer season:

Never leave your child/pet in an unattended car, even with the windows open. Even short errands can cause health issues
Teach children not to play in, on or around cars. Children can accidentally lock themselves in a car.
    ● Make sure all children are out of the vehicle when you reach your destination. Don’t overlook sleeping infants.
Always lock car doors and trunks, even when parked in the driveway or near your home. Children can sneak into and get locked into these parked vehicles.
    ● Before restraining your child into the car seat, make sure you check the temperature of your child’s safety seat surface and safety belt buckles. Children can be severely burned if car seat surfaces reach 150°F or more.
If your child gets locked inside a car, call 9-1-1 immediately. ###
