February 3, 2009 - Two Alarm Fire Destroys Apartment Building

All escaped without injuries

The Shreveport Fire Department responded to an apartment building at 4111 Greenwood Lane at 2:44 AM this morning. Fire crews arrived on scene in three minutes to find heavy fire coming from the entire roof of the apartment with flames reaching 20-30 feet high. Battalion Chief Mike House immediately called for a second alarm response at 2:47 AM to the fire and set up a defensive fire attack utilizing high flow water streams through two Aerial Ladder Trucks. The two Ladder trucks and several fire attack crews on the ground brought the fire under control at 4:32 AM.

The apartments were occupied by eight residences. All escaped without injuries except for one who had a small cut to his finger. He was treated with first aid on the scene. All of the occupants were kept warm in two fire trucks till officials were able to locate sheltering for them.

Based on Fire Investigator’s interviews, one male occupant in apartment #105 was cooking with grease on the stove. He stated he went into the living room and came back later and saw fire on the stove. The occupant tried to put it out with water but that only increased the fire’s intensity.

The fire is still under investigation at this time. The apartment building was a total property loss.
