December 10, 2008 - The Shreveport Fire Department begins Smoke Alarm Installation Campaign

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Members of the Shreveport Fire Department and the Shreveport Job Corps are literally taking fire safety “to the streets.” On Thursday, December 11, 2008, approximately 50 firefighters and Job Corps students are scheduled to canvass the streets of the Allendale community, going door-to-door to install smoke alarms and distribute fire safety literature to the residents. The Smoke Alarm Installation campaign will begin at the site of Shreveport’s most recent fire death, 1540 Madison Avenue.

Earlier this week, the Shreveport Job Corps donated forty (40) ten-year lithium battery powered smoke alarms to the department in their effort to help save more lives. According to Fire Inspector Derrick T. Harris this contribution will add to our current arsenal of fire safety tools. Our goal during this campaign is to install at least 150 smoke alarms in this community.

The Shreveport Fire Department’s team will consist of Fire Chief Brian Crawford, his administrative staff, members of the Fire Prevention and Public Education Division, various fire captains and paramedics. In addition to installing smoke alarms, they will be on hand to offer home safety inspections and assist with developing an evacuation plan, if needed. “Educating the public about fire safety is the responsibility of every member of this department,” Crawford said. “We’re not going to waste any time putting this donation to use because our city can’t lose another life to fire. Our message is clear -Smoke Alarms Save Lives! ”
