December 8, 2008 - The SFD and Shreveport Job Corps Center Partner to distribute Smoke Alarms in Allendale Community Donation of forty, 10-year lithium battery powered smoke alarms The Shreveport Job Corps is continuing their long partnership with the Shreveport Fire Department in support of their effort to keep citizens safe from fire by purchasing and donating forty (40) - ten year lithium battery powered smoke alarms. On Tuesday, December 9 at 2 p.m., Lionel Fraser, the Director of Shreveport Job Corps Center, will present Shreveport Fire Chief Brian Crawford with 40 - ten year lithium battery powered smoke alarms. The presentation will be at the Shreveport Job Corps Center located at 2815 Lillian Street. The new 10-year lithium battery powered smoke alarms alleviate residents from having to change the battery as often as before. Under the Shreveport Fire Department’s FREE smoke alarm program, the noted smoke alarms will be placed in the homes of “High Risk” Shreveport residents. The Fire Safety Task force identified ‘high risk’ as the elderly, disabled, low socio-economic status and/or homes with very young children. The SFD’s Public Education Division will provide smoke alarm installation training for the 350 Job Corps students and faculty prior to the installation campaign. “We have partnered with the Shreveport Fire Department for a number of years,” said Franklin Hill, an employee of Job Corps and a member of the recent Fire Safety Task Force. “It’s a fact that smoke alarms save lives.” Purchasing and distribution of 10 year, tamper-proof, and lithium battery powered smoke alarms was one of the recommendations from the Fire Safety Task Force created by Chief Crawford. “Unfortunately, the Allendale Community has suffered two of the seven fires deaths this year, and we are committed to getting these smoke alarms in this community first. I will be working closely with our Division Heads to strategically plan to target other areas throughout the year, said Fire Chief Brian Crawford. If you or someone you know needs a smoke alarm, contact our Fire Prevention office at 673-6740. |
