September 26, 2008 - Hazardous Material Spill on Interstate 220

Tractor trailer truck carrying hazardous material spilled interrupting traffic

The Shreveport Fire Department was dispatched to Interstate 220 Eastbound at I-20 Eastbound at 9:00 pm for a tractor trailer truck that had spilled a hazardous material. The truck had a flat bed trailer carrying individual containers of a product called Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether, which is a corrosive and does have some health and flammability hazards associated with it. Each container held approximately 300 gallons of the product. As the truck was merging on to I-220 from I-20, the driver noticed one of the straps securing the load was coming loose and as the truck slowed down one of the containers came off the truck and rupture on impact.

The hazardous product was located in an area where it was contained and created no hazard for the public or Cross Lake. A privately contracted clean up company was dispatched from Texarkana, TX to clean up the spill. The Department of Environmental Quality and the Louisiana State Police responded to the call also and worked in conjunction with the Shreveport Fire and Police Department to secure and mitigate the incident. There were no injuries from the spill and traffic was reduced to one lane in the area till the product could be cleaned up.
