Fire Department’s Aviation Task Force Receives High Marks from FAA

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded the Shreveport Fire Department’s Aviation Task Force high marks following this years annual recertification inspection . . .

January 14 thru 16. Federal inspector Ron Hess of the FAA Southwest Division visited the department’s station twenty-one, located at the Shreveport Regional Airport, and assessed fire personnel on their practical and cognitive knowledge, skill, and ability when dealing with aviation disasters. Inspector Hess also looked closely at the condition, upkeep, and maintenance records of the massive aircraft firefighting trucks housed at the station and used for rescue and extinguishing operations during emergencies. Upon completion of the inspection, Hess stated, "Never have I seen an inspection go so smoothly and be without any deficiencies." All areas assessed received "above and beyond compliance" marks - the highest available.

Chief Gary Caskey oversees the Aircraft Task Force and attributes its success to the diligence and hard work of the employees who choose this line of work after entering the fire service. "This is a firefighting specialty within the fire service and one that requires a fierce commitment from those who choose it as a career" says Caskey. The men and women who makeup the task force are required to be state certified in aircraft fire rescue as well as rigorous training and retraining to stay abreast and on top of the changing conditions of the profession.
