Citizens urged to obey fireworks laws

Celebrations of the holiday season and the new year already can be heard throughout the night sky. But the Shreveport Police Department hopes residents who choose to set off fireworks will do so in accordance with city law.

Fireworks sales are legal between Dec. 15 and 10 p.m. Jan. 1. Hours for discharging them are between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m. each day, except on New Year’s Eve when the cutoff time is extended to 1 a.m. New Year’s Day.

If convicted of discharging a firearm on a state-recognized holiday, a person would be fined a minimum of $500 or ordered to spend 30 to 60 days in jail. If convicted of a second offense, the person will be fined a minimum of $500 and sent to jail for 60 days.

The law was changed by the Shreveport City Council in April of 2000 after the Police Department requested the fine be increased from $250 to $500.
