Woman charged with counterfeiting checks

A Shreveport woman was arrested on numerous charges related to her counterfeiting thousands of dollars worth of checks.

Debra Coleman, 24, of the 3200 block of Darien is charged with forgery, obstruction of justice, attempted escape and being a fugitive from Bell County, Texas.

During a traffic stop at Marston and Lyba streets, police found 18 counterfeit checks valued at more than $10,000. A subsequent search of her residence uncovered additional counterfeit checks valued at $21,582. The computer and the hardware used to make the checks was also discovered.

Besides the checks police discovered, Coleman is believed to have had acquaintances cash about $10,000 in additional counterfeit checks at a local business.

When arrested, Coleman was wanted by Bell County, Texas, authorities for violating her probation there, which she was serving for a forgery conviction. The other charges were tacked on after she attempted to have someone destroy the computer before police found it and for attempting to leave the jail with participants of the jail work release program.
