SPD to launch Police Summer Camp

About 100 boys ages 10 to 14 will be in the custody of the Shreveport Police Department this summer, but not because they have done anything wrong.

The boys will be campers participating in SPD’s first-ever Police Summer Camp. Their mission: have fun while learning that police officers are indeed their friends.

The youngsters will spend four days and three nights at the Garland Scout Ranch, located on U.S. Highway 171 in Stonewall, La. The camp runs from Wednesday, June 13, through Saturday, June 16.

A press conference will be held to kick off the camp at 2 p.m. Monday on the Murphy Street lawn in front of the SPD building.

Sponsors of the camp will be on hand to give their financial donations to the department, which is hosting the camp for free to boys throughout the

city of Shreveport.

The Boy Scouts of America will provide food, tent lodging and fun activities ideal for boys, such as fishing, archery, rifle ranch shooting, sports, crafts and water games. Other sponsors of the camp are Wal-Mart, Willis-Knighton, M.L. Bath, Broadmoor United Methodist Church, Lone Star Baptist Church and the SPD Police Pastor Program.

If anyone knows kids who would like to participate in the camp, they can call Sgt. Wendell Delaney at 673-6950.

Some of the campers will be on hand for the press conference. Don’t miss their cool camp shirts, which have a familiar face on them.
