Repeat robber arrested

A man who police believe robbed Radio Shack, Payless Shoe store and Home Choice furniture rental on multiple occasions is in Shreveport City Jail.

Calvin Michael Grant, 47, of Shreveport, has been charged with one count of armed robbery in connection with the Nov. 22 robbery of Radio Shack on North Market Street.

Grant and his wife, 51-year-old Gloria Grant , were taken into custody Thursday night by a team of officers who were working a surveillance operation.

The couple was apprehended in the 9000 block of Mansfield Road after detectives recognized the man from surveillance video tapes taken during previous robberies.

As of 4 p.m. today, Grant has been identified in a total of 14 armed robberies of business in Shreveport and will subsequently be charged with those robberies. He also is wanted in Bossier City for four robberies and in Phoenix, Arizona, for three armed robberies.

Meanwhile, Gloria Grant has been charged with accessory after the fact of armed robbery in connection with a Dec. 7 robbery of Home Choice Rentals at 3717 Jewella.

Under Louisiana law, the penalty for armed robbery can be enhanced from a minimum sentence of 10 years to 15 years in prison if a handgun is used during an armed robbery. Punishment for armed robbery with a gun can be 15 to 99 years for each count.

"A lot of people don’t realize that as of July of 1999, the penalty for armed robbery with a gun has been tripled, from a minimum of five years in prison to 15 years in prison. That must be served without the possibility of probation, parole or suspension of sentence," said Lt. Glynn Mitchell of the Shreveport Police Department’s Violent Crimes Investigative Unit.
