The City of Shreveport’s Internal Audit Office (IAO) conducts audits
of all offices, departments, commissions, and boards of the City. The
IAO seeks to promote accountability and improve effectiveness,
efficiency, and economy of city operations. This is accomplished by
performing objective audits, reviews, and analyses of city activities
and offering recommendations to management that will result in improved
performance of city operations and services.
The City Charter of 1978 established a City Internal Auditor
position, along with the necessary staff to fulfill an internal audit
function. The City Council appoints the City Internal Auditor.
Consequently, the IAO’s independence and objectivity is maintained by
reporting directly to the City Council, and also, by not exercising
direct authority over any department, system, or activity subject to
audit.
In discharging its responsibilities, the IAO performs audits that
identify and evaluate whether the City is adequately and/or properly:
- complying with applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures
- accomplishing goals and objectives
- reporting financial and performance information with reliability and integrity
- ensuring the economy, efficiency, and effectiveness of city operations and resources
- safeguarding and protecting assets from loss, damage, or inappropriate use
- designing appropriate internal controls.
This office also operates a
Fraud Hotline
that investigates allegations of fraud, waste, or abuse of government
resources.
