Household Chemicals

Do you have any of the following items sitting around your home or garage that you'd like to get rid of?

Used motor oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, oil filters, brake fluid and similar automotive products;
Pesticides, herbicides and insecticides;
Latex and oil-based paints and stains, paint thinner, and paint solvents;
Household batteries - alkaline and nicad;
Flammable hydrocarbon products like gasoline and solvents;

Mercury batteries, switches and thermometers and non-metallic mercury;
Aerosols;
Automobile/Marine batteries; Tires;
Cleaning products including acids, bases, bleach and furniture polish; Fluorescent lamps

If so, the City of Shreveport, along with Bossier City, Caddo Parish, Shreveport Green, and the Bossier Clean City Committee sponsor an annual "Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day," usually in the late summer or early fall, where you can bring these items so that they can be properly disposed of. Check the newspaper and TV for time, date and location of the next event.

AVOID DUMPING CHEMICALS DOWN THE DRAIN, FLUSHING THEM DOWN THE TOILET OR DISPOSING OF THEM IN A STORM DRAIN!!

These substances will end up in our lakes, bayous and streams. (If you live in the Cross Lake Watershed and allow these materials to flow into storm drains, they can end up in our drinking water reservoir!)

Remember that sewage treatment plants are designed to treat sewage, not hazardous chemicals, so flushing them down the toilet is no better than dumping in a storm drain.
