Policy Statement
It is the policy of the City of Shreveport Police Department to assure equal employment opportunity to its employees and applicants for employment on the basis of fitness and merit without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, disability, sex or age.

The City of Shreveport Police Department will follow this policy in recruitment, hiring, promotion into all classifications (except where specifically directed by State Civil Service Law to consider seniority), compensation, benefits, transfers, assignments, tours of duty, shifts, layoffs, returns from layoff, demotions, terminations, and training. It is not the intention of this policy to permit or require the lowering of bonafide job requirements of qualification standards to give preference to any employee of applicant for employment. However, we will take positive affirmative measures in accordance with the prevailing Federal and Sate laws to recruit minorities, females, and persons with disabilities to all levels within the department.

Any employee of the City of Shreveport Police Department who fails to comply with this policy is subject to appropriate disciplinary action.

Employment


The Shreveport Police Department is always searching for men and women who are able to meet the challenge of becoming one of ‘Shreveport’s Finest’. 

Applications for Police Officer / Jailer I and Police Communications Officer will be continuously accepted.


Minimum Requirements
Must be a U.S. citizen
Must be at least 21 years old to take the State Civil Service Exam. There is no maximum age limit
Must have a valid driver’s license, be in general good health, pass an extensive background check, have no felony convictions, and be of good moral character
Civil Service Examination
As a State Civil Service examinations for the position of police officer are offered by the Shreveport Police Department and other police agencies throughout Louisiana.

Test scores are transferable and are valid for up to 18 months. Applicants for Communications Officer do not have to take the test in Shreveport. Only  person Jailer must test in Shreveport. Information regarding testing dates and locations are available by calling the State Civil Service Hotline at (225) 925.4567.


Consideration For Employment
To be considered for employment, applicants must successfully complete all of the following:
Civil Service Examination
Extensive background investigation
Applicant Review Board (police applicants only)
Polygraph examination
Psychological examination
Complete medical examination
Physical fitness assessment (police and jailer applicants)
Drug screen
Post Certified Police Officers
Law enforcement officers who are already certified by the Police Officers Standard Training (POST) Council may go to work immediately without having to attend the first eight weeks of POST training at the Shreveport Police Academy. The condition of employment is subject to the normal hiring process and procedures for new hire applicants seeking employment with the Shreveport Police Department. In addition, the POST certified officer's certifications and qualifications will be reviewed by the Academy Director to ensure the applicant meets minimum standards of the Shreveport Police Department.

Officers who are interested in applying must have an active civil service test score and successfully complete the departmental selection process before being hired.

If selected, officers go to work immediately with a Field Training Officer. They will be reassigned to the Police Academy at a later time to complete training in departmental procedures.

Starting Salaries
New Police Officers Taking Their OathPolice Officers - $2,179 per month while attending Police Academy. Upon completion of the academy, salary increases to $2,750 per month as of April 1, 2008. One year after hire date, officers receive an additional $500 in State Supplemental Pay.

Jailer - $2,332 per month

Communications Officer - $3,257 per month
