The Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission was established in July 1984, with 27 women from diverse backgrounds and communities selected to serve. Today, under the leadership and guidance of Mayor Cedric
B. Glover, the Commission continues to actively work to identify the needs of Shreveport women and youth, and provide innovative methods of addressing how those needs can best be met.
• ADVOCACY: SMWC
addresses social, economic and
political concerns and advocate for opportunities for women and young people to
gain employment and entrepreneurship skills and credentials and move into and
advance into employment.
• EDUCATION: SMWC promotes literacy and the involvement of youth in community affairs in order that they may become contributing members of society.
• QUALITY OF LIFE: SMWC promotes healthy families and our community through awareness and education and opportunities for women to achieve success at work, home and in the community.
The Commission is always seeking input from women who are interested in helping other women. Commission meetings are held the first Thursday of every month in the Mayor’s Conference Room at Government Plaza, and are open to any woman who would like to attend. Applications from women who live or work in Shreveport who are interested in possibly serving on the Commission are accepted year-round.

The Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission is dedicated to:
1. Promoting and furthering the economic status, health, safety, education, leadership, and advocacy opportunities for the advancement of the women and youth in the City of Shreveport;
2. Enhancing the quality of life for all area residents, particularly women and families; and
3. Seeking partnerships with government agencies, nonprofit groups, and private groups and business to develop the information, expertise, volunteers, financing, and/or other resources to accomplish the goals and work of the Commission.
The purposes/functions of this organization are to:
A. Serve as a clearinghouse for information regarding the concerns of women in the City of Shreveport;
B. Act as a liaison with the Mayor and his Office concerning issues affecting women;
C. Serve as an ex-officio board of women to whom the Mayor or other City officials may come and address the City’s concerns regarding women’s issues in Shreveport;
D. Plan, promote and assist in implementing programs that address critical issues affecting the well-being of Shreveport women and youth;
E. Partner with other organizations and public bodies in advancing the causes of women and youth in Shreveport;
F. Foster an across-the-board support of women in the City of Shreveport; and
G. Submit an annual report to the Mayor that identifies progress made in addressing the needs of the women and youth of Shreveport during the previous year and recommendations for addressing critical problems that may need addressing in the following year.
Goal I: Education
Objective 1.1 Participating in youth activities in order that they may become
contributing members of society.
Specific Program:
- Support of the City's Opportunity and Empowerment Fair and any other
citywide programming that affects women and children.
Goal 2: Quality of LifeObjective 2.1 Promote
healthy families and communities through awareness and education
Specific Program:
- Develop and promote a website for
information sharing.
Objective 2.2 Increase opportunities for women to
achieve success at work, home and community, and annually recognize women who
have made a difference with the presentation of the Commission's HERA Award
Specific Program:
- Sponsor and co-sponsor forums on issues of
importance to women and youth at the facility the City will operate to house
activities formerly held a the YWCA facility.

The Shreveport Mayor’s Women’s Commission
is seeking nominations for the HERA Award. Three HERA Awards will be
presented to honor unsung heroes who have made a positive difference in
Shreveport in the areas of Advocacy, Education and Quality of Life.
The Awards recognize the recipients' untiring and selfless volunteer efforts
to be Helpful, Effective, and Responsible Advocates for Shreveport women and
youth.
Criteria for the awards include:
- Has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to
volunteerism
- Is a positive influence in meeting community
needs or enhancing the quality of life in Shreveport
- Has demonstrated acts of generosity and kindness
- Embraces community service as an outgoing
commitment
- Contributions should have been made within the
past 12 months, as well as ongoing efforts which demonstrate a depth of
commitment
- Promotes and/or advances public understanding
about important community issues/concerns
- Demonstrates high standards of character and
moral standing
- Fosters coordination and cooperation among
diverse audiences and stakeholders in the community and promotes unity

The HERA Awards will be presented Thursday,
November 11, at the Barnwell Center from 6:00 PM until 7:30 PM. This
will be the fourth annual presentation of the awards by Shreveport Mayor
Cedric Glover and the Shreveport Mayor's Women's Commission,
The Shreveport Mayor's Women's Commission is
composed of 20-30 women who are residents of Shreveport or employed in the
City of Shreveport. Each member must maintain an active membership,
including attendance at monthly meetings, and participation in Commission
sponsored events. The makeup of the Commission reflects the diversity
of the community insofar as the ethnic, economic, age, and cultural make-up
of the city's population. New Commissions are generally elected in
November, with their term beginning the following January.
