WHAT IS THE CITIZEN’S FIRE ACADEMY?

The Citizen’s Fire Academy is the newest training program offered by the Shreveport Fire Department. This program is designed for community leaders and other citizens who have a genuine desire to reduce the number of lives lost and the amount of property damage in our city. This program covers departmental policies, procedures, staffing and the "why’s" of Fire Department operations. This ten day dynamic program will provide knowledge in fire prevention, rescue, communication, hazardous material identification, extinguisher training, basic first aid, and cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Citizens will be allowed to participate in practical drills, both firefighting and emergency medical exercises. Participants will complete this course being more conscious of their environment and safety oriented. Certificates will be awarded during graduation exercises to be held at the completion of this course.

WHEN?

The course participants meet once a week at a designated location for ten weeks. Classes meet from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and requires a commitment from the citizens to attend all sessions. Students are to provide their own transportation to and from each class. Casual clothing is recommended.

HOW DO I APPLY?

Fill out the application below. A committee will select twenty (20) candidates for each class. Mail or deliver the application to the following address:

SELECTION PROCESS INSTRUCTIONS

Your interest in the Shreveport Fire Department is greatly appreciated. In an effort to secure students with high levels of honesty and integrity, we provide you with this set of instructions for completing the required documents. Please read and follow the instructions carefully.

The selection process of the Shreveport Fire Department consists of the following components:

1. Submission of Application

2. Preliminary Interview

3. Background Investigation

4. Final Review and Student Selection

ALL DOCUMENTS SUBMITTED BECOME PROPERTY OF THE SHREVEPORT FIRE DEPARTMENT.

This Application must be completed and returned or mailed to the Shreveport Fire Training Academy, 6440 Greenwood Road, Shreveport, Louisiana 71119.

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF THE CITIZEN’S FIRE ACADEMY

1. To assist the participant in developing an awareness of the Fire Department’s organizational structure, operational procedures and its general mission.

2. To strengthen community support for the Department.

3. To develop a commitment between community leaders, administration, and departmental staff members to decrease the loss of life and property through training and education.

CITIZEN’S FIRE ACADEMY PROGRAM POLICIES

The following policies are in effect for the Shreveport Fire Department Citizen ’s Fire Academy. All citizens enrolling in the program are expected to follow these policies.

1.  Classes will be three (3) hours in length beginning at 6:00 p.m. and ending at 9:00 p.m. All classes will start on time and participant are encouraged to be on time for start-up and from breaks.

2.  Attendance is an important part of the course, therefore, any student missing more than two (2) classes will not receive a diploma at graduation.

3.  In accordance with City policy, NO tobacco use is allowed inside Fire Department buildings or vehicles.

4.  It is requested that NO shorts, tank tops or t-shirts permitted during classes. In addition, NO high heel shoes during field trips or exercises. It is recommended that slacks or jeans be worn for outside activities.

5.  You will wear your Citizen’s Fire Academy I.D. tag at ALL times when riding with the Fire Department. At no time will you be required to take part in an emergency scene operation!

Your safety is the most important part of the program, therefore, all participants must follow the instructions given by their instructors.
